You might be thinking, “What’s a 48 North, and what lies beyond it?” Good questions. Those of you that, like me, have a penchant for navigation will know that 48 North is shorthand for “at a latitude of 48 degrees north of the equator.” It is the angular distance north of the equator, typically expressed as degrees-minutes-seconds, like 48 degrees 07 minutes 42 seconds. I prefer using decimal minutes, such as 48 degrees 7.69 minutes. 48 7.69 N tells me all I need to know to fix my latitude on a map (if by land) or chart (if by sea).

Symbolically, 48 North is the approximate latitude of Port Angeles, Washington (48 0.00 N lies approximately 7.7 nautical miles, 8.8 statute miles, south of Port Angeles). It is upper boundary of the lower third of the Salish Sea, which stretches from Olympia Washington to Campbell River, British Columbia.

Beyond is simply that – beyond. Vancouver Island lies beyond. So do those places and ideas that I visit, have visited, and those that I plan or hope to . . . real or imaginary. Like those cozy little places on the water. Like the Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

More to come . . .

What follows is example content from the WordPress theme that I’ve elected to use . . . for now. I’m keeping it in place, mostly for formatting ideas, until I further develop this page.

This is an example page. It’s different from a blog post because it will stay in one place and will show up in your site navigation (in most themes). Most people start with an About page that introduces them to potential site visitors. It might say something like this:

Hi there! I’m a bike messenger by day, aspiring actor by night, and this is my website. I live in Los Angeles, have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas. (And gettin’ caught in the rain.)

…or something like this:

The XYZ Doohickey Company was founded in 1971, and has been providing quality doohickeys to the public ever since. Located in Gotham City, XYZ employs over 2,000 people and does all kinds of awesome things for the Gotham community.
